About Kidney Research UK:
Kidney Research UK was founded in 1961 and is the leading UK charity dedicated to funding research aimed at finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for kidney disease. They have over £10.1 million invested in research at any one time, awarding grants to doctors, nurses and researchers across the UK. The charity also award grants to kidney patients so that they can cope with the unexpected costs of their condition, and campaign for better patient access to renal services and are dedicated to raising awareness of kidney disease.
Kidney Research UK operate a kidney health information service to answer the questions kidney patients inevitably have about their condition, and a range of web-based literature is available on various kidney diseases. The charity run joint appeals with local hospitals, to provide renal units with equipment not catered for by the NHS.
The lives of over three million people in the UK today are under threat from chronic kidney disease. This number is set to grow as the population ages, placing greater strain on the system. Currently only one in four people receive the kidney transplant they need. 90% of people, on the transplant list are waiting for a kidney - that’s around 7,000 people. Even though cases of kidney failure are increasing at over five per cent every year, sadly Kidney Research UK is currently only able to fund one in five research projects presented to them and desperately needs to raise more funds to find a cure for the illness.
FACTS ABOUT KIDNEY DISEASE
- Kidney disease is incurable and is a silent killer
- Kidney diseases can affect people of any age
- The only medical treatments currently available for kidney disease are; dialysis, where a patient has to be connected to a machine for up to several hours a day, several days a week, where they’re unable to get up and move around; or transplantation, for which there is a huge shortage
- In the UK 90 per cent of people on the organ transplant list are waiting for a kidney – that’s approximately 7,000 patients. A kidney transplant is not for life, lasting 10-15 years on average
- Every year in the UK 47,000 people are being treated for kidney failure, 3,000 people die on dialysis, while 300 die waiting for a kidney transplant
- Every year around 6,600 people start renal replacement therapy
- Uncontrolled, or poorly controlled, high blood pressure can cause chronic kidney failure. Yet worryingly, large numbers of people with high blood pressure have not been identified
