National Transplant Week - Stefan on This Morning

Stefan was on Wednesday's This Morning with Dr Chris Steele talking about Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and his work with Kidney Research UK.

The following is from the This Morning website:

It's National Transplant this week, and to mark the occasion, Dr Chris Steele is joined by Stefan Booth, who tragically lost his mother Mish to polycystic kidney disease just a few weeks ago.

Dr Chris writes: On today's medical item, Stefan Booth from Eastenders, talks about his mother, who had a condition called Polycystic Kidneys that caused her to eventually need a kidney transplant.

As the name implies this condition results from multiple cysts in the kidneys that can eventually destroy most of the normal kidney tissue. When this happens the kidneys are unable to eliminate the toxic waste products that are normally excreted by healthy kidneys, and the build up of these toxins cause widespread devastation throughout the body.

This obviously affected Stefan's mother so severely that she went into kidney failure and had to have a kidney transplant to save her life.

Thanks to an unknown kidney donor her transplant gave her an extra 12 years of life and she died recently from an overwhelming infection unrelated to the transplant. Transplants save lives and at present 10,000 people in the UK are waiting for a suitable organ, with three dying every day in their wait for suitable donors. We need more organ donors!
